I can't decide on getting the Littman Cardiology III or the Master Cardiology stethoscope.

Which do you all have and prefer? Any ups or downs to each particular one? I've tried and used both but not constantly enough to be able to decide which one I want.

Let me know what you think. Thanks a million !

Edited to add: I'm an experienced ER nurse who is working towards Master's as an NP. Think my hearing is deminishing a bit... having hard time auscultating with regular/inexpensive stethoscope.

They're both too expensive. Auscultation is very operator-dependent, and it seems the medical students and residents I've taught do not have very good skills. That may be a matter of experience or a matter of reliance on echocardiograms and such, which would make for a good argument at the nearest pub. But the most important part of the stethoscope is the part between the ear-pieces. Also, stethoscopes have an amazing propensity to grow legs. I'd suggest you get a US$20 Sprague-Rappaport type, which will be perfectly adequate for any need you might have.

You didn't tell us where you are in your career. The scopes you mentioned are great but expensive. There are many websites that discuss stethoscopes. I'm sure you are better at searching the net than I.

I wore out or lost 3 pediatic Littmans throughout my career. They were great, even for screaming kids who didn't want to be examined. Preparticipation exams on hulking football players took forever with the small bell and diaphragm. So your choice also depends on the field in which you want to specialize. If you want to go into cardiology, go for one of the best. If dermatology is your goal, go for economy.

Be sure you have a choice of ear pieces. They make a great difference.

I use a Littman Cardio II. I like having the smaller bell and Littman has great hearing quality in noisy situations. Plus it is easier on the wallet!

i'm a first year med student, and just got a littman cardiology III. it sounds great! (and this is coming from a very untrained ear). it did cost me $125, so you'll have to decide if that is a worthwhile investment.
