Regarding "Atma"(soul) let us learn from the Gita itself.
Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.
Bhagavad-gita-2.12
As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.Bhagavad-gita-2.13
Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both. Bhagavad-gita-2.16
An excerpt from the purport by Srila Prabhupada.
There is no endurance of the changing body. That the body is changing every moment by the actions and reactions of the different cells is admitted by modern medical science; and thus growth and old age are taking place in the body. But the spirit soul exists permanently, remaining the same despite all changes of the body and the mind. That is the difference between matter and spirit. By nature, the body is ever changing, and the soul is eternal. This conclusion is established by all classes of seers of the truth, both impersonalist and personalist. In the Vishnu Purana (2.12.38) it is stated that Vishnu and His abodes all have self-illuminated spiritual existence (jyotimsii vishnur bhuvanani vishnuh). The words existent and nonexistent refer only to spirit and matter. That is the version of all seers of truth.
That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
Bhagavad-gita-2.17
Lord Krishna gives in verses 22 to 25, further information.
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.
The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.
This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.
It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

No,the soul can never be divided into pieces.Actually there is no increase in the population of the souls but there is an increase in the human species. The animals are after their punishment ,the soul is given a chance to accumalate good credits and to serve Lord.the animals are getting human form because God has given them the chance to remove their sufferings by serving Him.

Hello guys. Not being a believer in reincarnation myself, I can't aggree with the idea of the animal and plant souls coming into the new generations of humans. But from the strict internal logic of Hinduism, this point of view makes sense: since plant and animal life is decreasing today, it's only logical that humans increase.
Besides, this theory explains why our species is increasingly full of vegetables like the couch-potatoes, and with increasingly animal crowds of termites, pigs, apes, bulls...
Just kidding.

It should be noticed as the population of human beings is raising simultaneously the population of animals is decreasing .Technically it could be a reason if you give it a scientific out-look .And if you want to believe in Gita , the process explained in it about recieving human-life after passing 84'00'000 yonis is nothing but to make people understand that as how lucky they are to be a human being and capable of making a difference to this world..........but unfortunately people read Gita but donnot understand it .Inspite of being so powerful ones on this planet human mostly chooses the destruction!!

reason for increasing population is that human life is coming in this era, after enjyoing 8400000 "yoni" as u said earlier.further a soul can not be multiplied because it is identified by our creature who had allowed each and every soul a particular time frame to go ahead during 8400000 "yoni".

This is an unseen fact. No visible to microscope. Permit me to attempt my submission. Bhisma the great Dharmatha did not answer to the basic simple question of Mahasadhvi Draupadhi in the Sabha. Instead he suggested her to ask his beloved husband Dharmaja who is quite competent to answer her question. All are aware the question, but in telugu it is "Thannodi Nannodena, Naanodi thannodena". When Dharmaraja lost the game by putting himself in the fray. Then how he can offer Draupadi to continue the game. One can not taste and also express the taste of the item. Also one can not see the electricity. Our body is hardware, our mind is software, electrict/UPS, unknown operation every unvisiable is in the form of Atma. It all depends on how one search and reasearch for spirituality. Thank you.

Because all living things have soul. Even plants & animals which die on re-birth take the human form. This is one reason why we should be environment friendly. Old epics highlight these features.

"Atma" cannot be multiplied. When number of human is increasing, the number of other creatures are decreasing - like trees, animals etc.
