Yes you do need to get a line with BT first before you can switch to another supplier. Bt will also require you to sign up 2 some sort of contract before they provide you with service. The only way you can manage to avoid going with BT is if you get cable.
If there has been a previous BT line in your home before the instalation will be free of charge. They will let you know of any costs before you agree. Try ringing them on 0800 800150

NTL/Telewest do all their provider independantly of one yet another and BT. so that you may have broadband from them with out even having a landline. or you may have television, telephone and broadband. i do not comprehend why they have informed you that they can't do it, notwithstanding it is the in trouble-free words way round no longer having a BT line.

The simple answer is no you don't. You would need to check with your broadband supplier if they are compatible with your line provider - unless you go to a supplier for your line and broadband together.
Check in you local phone book/yellow pages for companies that supply your area and confirm if they can support whichever companies broadband or vice versa.
Good luck.

most of the broadband companies run through your BT line so there is no need to change. Unless you go for cable and then you will have to change.

It depends on your area, if there is a cable network for telewest broadband or NTL you can get your telephone and internet from them otherwise you will need a BT line.
