I know that it is french and I translate it as "What do you make in life?" But I am not sure what this is supposed to mean.

Thank you.

The question has been answer. I just wanted to say that John-John is wrong: when you ask that question, it always refers to your job. If you don't have a job per se (ex: you're a housewife, you're unemployed, you don't need to work cos you're loaded), it's up to you to come up with an answer, but it always refers to your activity, not what your hobbies are.

"How do you earn your living ? "
"What's your occupation ?"
"What's your job ?"

A bientot is "see you later/soon"

It is correct what's been written about, so far. Now, this phrase also refers to simply "what do you do in your life", including your interests, hobbies, etc. It isn't only a query for business life.-

Ciao.......John-John.

I think it is asking 'what you do for a living?'. Like when we ask, "What do you do?", we aren't asking what they do for fun or whatever. We want to know where they work, what they do for a living.
