I just go a 5X20 golf distance scope - not a laser type. The etching inside reads from 50 yds to 200 yds. Are these pretty accurate?

No - it assumes that there is no paralax error, and that the target is a fixed height. This is usually based on a notional height of a flag-stick being say 6ft; we all know that this isn't always the case!
This device takes no account of relative elevation, and fails to give accurate readings as a consequence.

We should learn our distances the tried and tested way (GPS) - just kidding! - by walking the course.

Nope. They rely on the pin to be of a consistent height and assume that you have a good eye and steady hand. Many of these have been sold, most are in a shoebox in the back of a closet.

Not really. It's worth 5 of the 10 dollars you paid for it.
