Hi there! Our pug puppy (Petunia-named after Porky Pig's girlfriend since she snorts) has an outie belly button. This has been there since day one that we got her.

She goes to the vet tomorrow for the second round of shots, and I know they are going to say, "we can fix it when she get's fixed" but we want to breed her.

Is there anyone out there who had an outie belly button on their dog, and can it be taken care of without surgery.

There is no such thing as an "outie" belly button in dogs. As others have said, it's an umbilical hernia.

Causes:
1. Dam biting too close to the abdominal wall when severing the umbilical cord.
2. Genetic predisposition.
3. "Delayed Closure" of the abdominal wall.

As a side note, umbilical hernias do seem to be a common occurance in Pugs, which implies a genetic origin. Research your puppy's pedigree by talking to her breeders and the people they got her ancestors from. If this was something often seen in her lines, you should reconsider breeding her.

If her breeders don't know anything about her pedigree, seriously consider having her spayed. If her breeders were that ignorant, you have no idea what kind of genetic problems she's carrying.

I just have to shake my head when I read these answers from some people. I often wonder where they get their information.

You can have this hernia fix. But the great advice I can give to you is not to breed your dog. Even though a vet can stitch up the hernia, and some closes on their own..The puppies can lay against it , cause it to open up. The puppies drop through the opening and die. Not saying this will happen but there is a chance that it can. My Shih Tzu was born with a hernia or outtie belly button as some call it. So I never bred her. Her closed on its own, but I never wanted to put her or her pups in danger. There are ways to check to see if a puppy has a hernia.. Have your vet show you how to check for one. Wait a while before you put her through any operation it may close on its own, but never breed her if you do then that is a sad risk you are taken. The intestine can also come through the opening. The vet will tell you more about that.

It could be a hernia, which looks like a outtie belly button. If gut gets stuck in there it could get serious however. My puppy had one, she had an operation to get rid of it but it means she can't breed. I'd get it checked out if i were you because as i said it coud get serious if it is a hernia.

It might not be, i'm just guessing and it might be fine but take her to the vet incase.

Give her a doggy treat for me :)

This sounds like an umbilical hernia. Only a vet can make a diagnosis for sure. This can be a serious problem which may require surgery to repair. Do a google search for "umbilical hernia dog" and you will see lots of info about why this is the case. It may also be the case that she should not be bred if this is a hernia. Sorry, but you may have to accept that. To breed her otherwise just because you want to would be irresponsible.

our new puppy has an outie belly button, or it could be a hernia. We don t know, it s the size of my thumb nail. She is the cutes, and sweet, 7 week old, free puppy. It wasn t until we brought her home, now going on 2 days. What does it cost for surgery? If it s just an outie we don t care, we just want a healthy pet.

Its not a belly button. Its a Hernia.

It will go away on its own. My Pekegnese had one when she was a puppy..and now she doesn't have it anymore..

Dogs don't have belly buttons..silly.

First off, when will the discrimination against outie belly buttons end? It does not make you inferior regardless of species. Secondly, a belly button "outie" is caused due to various amounts of scar tissue left at the time of umbilical separation, and therefore has no bearing on genetics for breeding purposes. "Fixing" it will only cause undo discomfort to the dog, for absolutely no reason other than you do not like how it looks.

No, an outie is fine. But unless you are showing your pug, and getting titles on her, I wouldn't breed her. There are tons of pugs at the shelters waiting for a new home....please don't add more.

an outie belly butten doesn't stop us from having babies infact most women eventually get them during pregnancy. It won't hurt the dog. YOu don't need to surgically fix it unless its just cosmotically upsets you. But when you are ready to breed let me know i have an awesome male pug I want to breed.
