hi,
at our request, as we couldn't pick up the dog (1 1/2 male shih tzu) right away, the breeder was going to get him neutered. the vet she uses, gives the dog a tranquilizer of some sort before putting them out.

according to the breeder the dog had a reaction (not a siezure, but not normal) to the tranq and they did not proceed with the neutering.
is this something that happens with dogs?
are there lasting effects?
should i be concerned about taking this dog who we/my family did fall in love with when we met him, but is not living in our home yet?
thanks.

Dogs, just like humans, can have alergic reactions to medications.

He should be fine, but you'll need to know what they gave him that caused the reaction so you can get that on file with the vet you'll be using.

When you first get him, make sure you take him in for a "new dog checkup" and that the person that you're getting him from will take him back if any severe health issues are found.

I would ask the breeder for the vets phone number and to grant you permission to speak in detail with the vet the specifics of what happened and what you can expect. It is not entirely unusual for some dogs to have allergic reactions to some things and meds.

This could be related to the type the vet used and using something different would be fine. So you really need to discuss this with the vet to know for sure. It is very possible this dog will still make a fine family pet, but I would want to know if this reaction is the result of anything more serious before making a commitment.

Yes, animals of all kinds can have reactions to meds and anasthesia. Just stay in contact with the breeder so that you're aware of what's going on. I don't think you should be concerned about taking the animal in - I also think the breeder is being responsible making sure that the dog gets treated/better for whatever side effect it's having before transferring his care to you, the new owners.

Yes, dogs, like any thing else can/do have reactions to meds and anesthesia. I have two Greyhounds and I have to be careful about what flea/tic stuff I use, & the doctors have to be careful about what anesthesia they use because they are very sensitive to some chemicals. Your best defense is knowledge...learn as much about the breed & your dog as you can so that you can make good decisions...also a great VET is critical. Good luck

I would speak directly to the breeder and the vet and get their input as to exactly what happened. Make sure both stories jive. Yes,dogs can have adverse reactions to any medicine. Some breeds are more prone to it than others.

I would find out what type of med or tranq was used so that in the future you can let your vet know that the dog has had issues with anestesia and meds.
