Treatment of leprosy with only one antileprosy drug will always result in development of drug resistance to that drug. Treatment with dapsone or any other antileprosy drug used as monotherapy should be considered as unethical practice.







Treatment of Leprosy: MDT (Multidrug Therapy) Regimens



Multibacillary leprosy[i] (adults)

Duration of treatment: 1 year (previously 2 years)

Rifampicin: 600mg monthly
Clofazimine: 300mg monthly and 50mg daily
Dapsone: 100mg daily

Multidrug therapy for multibacillary leprosy. MDT packs are now donated to WHO by Novartis


Paucibacillary leprosy[i] (adults)

Duration of treatment: 6 months

Rifampicin: 600mg monthly
Dapsone: 100mg daily

Multidrug therapy for paucibacillary leprosy. MDT packs are now donated to WHO by Novartis



Single lesion paucibacillary leprosy (adults)

Single dose of:

Rifampicin: 600mg
Ofloxacin: 400mg
Minocycline: 100mg

The extremely slow rate of growth associated with the causative agent of leprosy necessitates a multi-focal approach to antimicrobial therapy. Simply put, all of the mycobacteria grow so dang slow that conventional therapy just doesn't work.
