an accumulator is a wet cell battery. they use plates of lead, submerged in acid(electrolite), to hold and conduct electricity.
all car batteries are of this type and are used because they can be recharged whilst in use and are high current devices, needed to repeatedly activate the heavy starter motor and take the large current drain of using heaters or lights on a car.

Its similar to a car battery in design but much smaller, they were used many years ago to power radios when electricity was not available to homes as it is now.You took your accumulator to a shop on a weekly basis to get it charged.(Ex television service engineer).
