Whenever I open my mouth I get a pain in my jaw close to my ear on the left side, I can kind of feel it in my ear. It doesn't hurt to touch my jaw or ear with my hand, it only hurts when I open my mouth. Any thoughts on what this is?

Sounds like it could be TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorders include a variety of conditions that cause tenderness and pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Your TMJ is the ball-and-socket joint on each side of your head where your lower jawbone (mandible) joins the temporal bone of your skull.

The lower jaw has rounded ends (condyles) that glide in and out of the joint socket when you talk, chew or yawn. The surfaces of the condyle and the socket of the temporal bone are covered with cartilage and separated by a small disk, which absorbs shock and keeps the movement smooth. The muscles that enable you to open and close your mouth stabilize this joint.

Between 5 percent and 15 percent of people in the United States experience pain associated with TMJ disorders, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the National Institutes of Health. Women are more likely than men to develop TMJ disorders.

In most cases, pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders can be alleviated with self-managed care or nonsurgical treatments, but more severe cases may need to be treated with dental or surgical interventions.

You can also be experiencing TMJ that's the abbreviation for temporal mandibular joint soreness. It is caused by means of chewing- harm, or sound asleep on that facet of your mouth and you will be grinding your enamel at night time--- you have got to see a surgeon-- there are retainers they positioned on your mouth to give up the grinding. Wisdom enamel impaction will also be the purpose- did you've got your knowledge enamel pulled? See a dentist first- if no support than a gp. The different likelihood, and I hate to mention it, is a middle assault. People get jaw soreness while they're experiencing a middle assault.

I had something similiar and it was and infection in a tooth, I would see my GP and see if he or she agrees and then off to the dentist. Don't let it go to long Abcessed tooth can get really painful.

I agree with the first answer, Sounds like TMJ. I would suggest to go and talk with your Dentist not your Dr.
