Hello has anyone got any bright (and sensible) ideas on how to stop children (2 and 3 years old) who share a room getting up and switching the light on (and hence then waking the other up) Ideally I'm looking for a product that I can either bolt over the existing lightswitch to protect it or a childproof lightswitch which I can swap the old one out for.

we have this exact problem with our todler. She can reach teh room light switch from her cot, and there is no other place we can put her.
My husband had the brilliant idea of switch off the particular fuse for that room when we put her to bed. Modern fuse boxes have different switches for lights, and power points, and for different rooms so we could switch off the fuse for the lights, without having to reset alarm clocks, and we can still have a night light on, because it is plugged into a power point and not on the same circuit as the lights.
The best bit about switching off at the fuse is that it will be years before your kids realise why the lights won't turn on when they try, but mum and dad can make them work.

I don't have an idea about the lightswitch plate, but what about an old-fashioned draw chain fixture. It'd be a little more work, but my SIL has those in her kids' rooms, and it's very nice. It's up high enough so that they can't reach it, and the light switch still works during the day. They just pull the chain at night.
Just an idea to bat around if no one else has one. I'd ask why they are switching the light on, do they perhaps need a nightlight to reassurre them if they wake up?
In any way, it's the age, give it a couple of years and they won't be doing that anymore. ;-)

i was in TK Maxx the other day and saw a light switch cover. u screw on a bolt kinda thingy round the excisting light switch, then at night u simply click the cover on it. it has a latch on the top so ur kids cnt get it off by simply knocking it off with something. i can't remember for the life of me what its called tho!! i culd always make summat outa wood to that kinda design? square round the edge of it, them put a hinged lid on the bottom part of the lid so u can flick it up n dwn. then 2 secure it just use a simple hook and eye piece that u can buy from homebase or about 50p. i think making it wuld b a cheaper option...the thing in TK Maxx was £35!!! ouch...making it would prob cost abt £5...£10 tops. plus them u can paint it whatever colour u wana

Fit a timing switch - one that you press and then it slowly releases itself after a certain time to turn itself off again. There must be some on the market that you can leave on permanently (say if you need it to be left on for a long time!)

Maybe get your normal switch changed with a dimmer switch, twisting the knob is harder than pressing it up or down and they are quite easy to fit. i have the same problem with electric sockets, they all have the plastic safety plugs in but ones that are in use are usually flicked on and off. That's kids for you!

there are light switches that automatically turn off after a few minutes of being left on. and there are switch covers that make them closed to being touched. and there is the pull chain socket you can but and screw into the socket and then the bulb into it. good luck with the little monsters :)

Give them a smack when they do it- they'll soon equate pain with an inappropriate activity.
What happened to people smacking their kids? And then they whine that they're out of control and being teenage shites and blame society.
Be a parent not a nanny.

Did you ever hear of discipline. The rule of thumb is....why would you let a little two foot nothing rule the roost?
