Chopsticks are ok when eating noodles they are not used for pickingup rice the way most europeans try
Chinese people hold the rice bowl to thier mouth and scoop the rice in with the chopsticks thai people only usechopsticks for noodles aspoon and a fork is used for rice dishes note it is the spoon not the fork which is put in the mouth to eat rice with the fork is the equivelent of eating peas with a knife

I can use chopsticks proficiently. Actually one time I was at a Chinese restaurant and the owner (a Chinese) came to me and told me that he has been watching me and that I can use the chopsticks better that his own son. lol
Anyway, when you start getting used to chopsticks, you start developing a better pallet for oriental food. For with each morsel of food you transfer from the bowl to your mouth you only get the right amount of sauce and condiments that is meant to be. When you eat oriental food with a fork or a spoon you end up wolfing down all the sauce and condiments in one go.
Trust me, it makes a difference.
Bon Apetit!

Yes. We have had lots of Asian students homestay with us in Australia while learning English. As they don't eat slabs of meat like most Aussies, and their meat is usually sliced in mouth sized portions before cooking(very fast to cook). They had trouble with a knife and fork (these days most can use), so I started to cook Asian style, and decided to try chopsticks. After a lot of mishaps one of the students gave me a good quality Japanese chop sticks, which have little rough surfaces on the bottom. Made it much easier to learn. I prefer these to Chinese which are much longer, or Korean, who use metal ones, which my noodles and rice still escape from!! I am vegan, and now use chopsticks about 6nights a week. My Grandson is just 5yrs old, but can use them with most things, but if he has trouble he spears the food!!

Of course! It is much easier to eat certain foods with chopsticks, like noodles. Some foods are impossible to eat with a fork, like sushi (which you will destroy if you stab). I totally disagree that they are 'cavemanish'. In fact, they are much more sophisticated. There is something about delicately picking up a morsel of food that I prefer over stabbing it and shoveling it in.
They just take practice getting used to, but they are far more dextrous and versatile than a knife and fork.
Enjoy!

Yes. I like using them because you have to eat slower and take time. Makes you think about what you're eating . . . not just using a fork as a shovel. Also, I think food tastes better ... may it's just psychological.
Keep practising ... eventually, it works! I started my kids off using them with stir fry over noodles. Now they can eat anything with chopsticks.

Yes, I can. And so can my daughter - who is 11 - but she's been able to since she was about 7. Until you get the technique down, you won't successfully get a ton of food in your mouth. But with practice, you'll become a pro and can neatly and effectively eat your meal. It's so fun to learn to do it, don't give up!
