I had my wisdom teeth taken out six days ago. If I take pain medication throughout the day, I'm ok. But the pain wakes me up during the night and it is HORRIBLE. My entire lower jaw seems to ache and I have a horrible taste in my mouth. I am so SICK of this hurting so much! I'm out of hydrocodone and have to resort to just Tylenol for pain relief. I have been taking antiobiotics religiously and rinsing my mouth with Glycothymoline. What can I do to keep this from causing me so much pain? Why hasn't the pain stopped yet?

The bad taste in your mouth is an indication that you have an infection that the antibiotics hasn't cleaned up and that needs to be addressed immediately. Sometimes a stronger one is needed and possibly the infection needs to be expressed from the extraction site. You may have gotten a particle of food lodged in the extraction site and it's causing this problem. Call your dentist today for an emergency appointment and have this taken care of. You shouldn't be in any pain after this much time unless there is a serious problem. Hope I've been of some help and I do hope you'll take my advice. Good luck!

It could be a dry socket, but they usually happen with in the first couple of days and the pain associated with those doesn't come and go, it stays and is horrific due to the open bone being exposed to all the elements and bacteria in your mouth.

Did the dentist give you the Glycothymoline rinse your using for treatment of this extraction? If not, then you need to discontinue and consult the dentist, this could be part of the reason for the pain.

For everybody, pain is different and everyone heals differently. I would definately call you dentist and see if you can get in, just to make sure you don't have a dry socket. Also, ask at that time for another refill on your pain meds. At night, try sleeping in an upright position. Basically you want your head above your heart. This should help with some of the throbbing. Good luck, otherwise. I had my wisdom teeth removed a year ago and I still had some swelling in my jaw a month later. Everybody just heals differently - so unfortunately, time is what will help the most.

You might have what they call "dry socket", which usually occurs when a tooth is pulled and causes a lot of pain. A dry socket is any socket in which a patient is having pain due to the loss of the blood clot thus exposing the bone to air, food, and fluids along with an offensive odor. This often occurs two or more days after an extraction and can last about 5-6 days. This condition exist when a blood clot is dislodged from the surgery site thus exposing the bone and fine nerve endings. The blood clot helps in the stopping of bleeding and lays the foundation or framework for new tissue and bone to develop over a two-month healing process. This condition is more common in the mandibular area and in back teeth due to poorer circulation in this area, with wisdom teeth being the most common site. Dry socket delays the healing process.
You should contact your dentist and check with him about this.

I just had mine pulled about 2wks ago, they told me that the pain should b gone in just a few days, HELL NO. like i said b4, its been 2wks and the pain is just now starting to subside. My doctor gave me 800mg tylenol and the vicatin. I ran out of the 800 and i called him. he gave me a little more which helped a lot. try to keep ur mouth closed. the air will aggrevate ur situation. Hold on a few more days and you should start to feel better, if not you may have something that they call DRY SOCKET. thats when the wound is left open because the place of surgurey is not healing correctly, some cases they make it bleed again so it can heal.
