What do you do - do you call in & take a vacation day, fib & call in sick, or risk driving in to work?

let me clarify for those of you who assume I asked this question because I don't go to work because of a flake - my motive was to start a discussion. You have some people who call in for everything and some who never call in. I hardly ever call in for anything and it erks me that some people get away with calling in & still get raises, etc.

I'm a cop. I have to get to work or I get wrote up and/or fired. This is why I own a four wheel drive SUV. I grew up in worse snow than what we get where I live. I learned to drive in the snow and know that speed is what kills you in the snow. Get up early and drive at turtle speed. Just make sure you have a full gas tank the night before. Slow and steady won the race. I also hate idiots who drive too fast and need to get pulled out of the ditch. If the roads are bad and you have the time. Then take off work. That is what personal days and comp time is for! If you want to get "experience" then go find an parking lot that hasn't been plowed and after the first few doughnuts, you get a little run and put your car into a skid and practice steering out of it. Live and learn kiddo.

I lived 2 3/4 hours from where I worked
and I was north and the work was south, so sometimes it would be snowing real hard at home and raining at work, I was always EARLY for work even when my house had a foot of snow..some guys who lived less than a mile or two would call in, then they were told that I made it and they better come in or get fired..they hated me for that..but hey you make the time to get there, period,
and hen it snowed I would leave some three or four hours early
sorry but this is the truth

smile
good luck

Regardless of the road conditions, or the weather, I always drive to work! I drive for a living, and the adverse road/weather conditions only make your driving abilities better as you drive in those conditions. To not drive those conditions means that your ability to drive will only be so good, you might not be able to handle adverse conditions if they occur while you are already on the road. What would you do then? Just pull over to the side of the road and wait out the storm? Could be there a while in some cases-not to mention the hazard you create sitting on the side of the road. I suggest that you just suck it up, and drive to work, even if that means that you drive slower and it takes longer to get there, at least your driving skills will improve over time.

i really dont want to sound like a b*tch but if you live where the weather is bad like i do, then their is no excuse for missing work because of weather. you have lived and adapted to the weather give yourself extra time. you know how to drive in the snow or what ever. if not move to a place that it doesnt snow or learn to drive in it. that is no excust to miss work and if i were an employer i would not take that as an excuse.
yes i am the one who lived the furthest away and always made it in on time usually early!
no offense:)

Nope. I'm a server, if the weather is bad we're going to be dead, so I make sure I call as early as possible and it's first come first serve in those situations. So any one who calls late still has to show up.

I can think of only one time weather stopped me from going to work. I'm one of those that feels guilty about now showing up, including if I don't feel well.

IF it is to bad out I usually call and tell my boss I am stuck. They understand they would rather have you miss a day then end up in a wreck and out for a long time.

I drive to work. I have to be there. People rely on me and I have to fulfill my duties.
