I was just there a couple months ago and had no problem communicating with most people I met. Virtually everyone in the tourism business (restaurants, shops, museums, etc) speak or understand some English. When in doubt, use charades. The people we met were very friendly, helpful and had a great sense of humor.
Fascinating city!

I would not say it's in most cases spoken in Istanbul however however, why must it's? It is Turkey and for this reason they talk Turkish. It is nevertheless very special whilst you cross to a traveller hotel corresponding to Bodrum, Marmaris, Dalyan wherein all of them talk English. In Istanbul, you are going to uncover individuals that talk English in one of the vital bars and so forth however hardly ever within the retail outlets. I have continuously been amazed that regardless of wherein I had been in Turkey, if I have had to cross to a police station for any purpose (corresponding to wasting a mobile / having a bag stolen or whatever) they on no account talk English.
