You put yourself in a catch 22 situation. If you ask him and get rejected, it may screw you and your friendship up with him. If you don't ask him, you won't know, and it will gnaw at you.

Word of advice, ask yourself, which is more important to you, your current status as a friend of his, or wanting to advance to the next level. Life is short. If you ask him, and he rejects you, as a true friend, the friendship should stay intact. It may be a little awkward for a couple of days, but the foundation of friendship that you have established should eventually weather that.

Go for it.

I'm guessing you're still young so why not just ask if he wants to hang out with you. I'm sure if he's your friend that asking him to hang out will be ordinary. Then when you get him alone slowly steer the conversation to the dance. Ask him if he's going to go with anyone and then lightly say that if he's okay with going to the dance with you that you won't mind. That's a way of not really asking him in a "relationship" kind of way. If he says no then you just shrug and say okay and that you're just asking since he doesn't seem to have anyone to take to the dance. If he says yes then take your cue from what happens at the dance and after. Goodluck I hope this helps. =)

take it slow

he may want to be just friends

ask him and see what he says dont push him and be expecting an answer of no

that way you wont have expectations that are not there
