Because the faith of many have failed them. When I say that, I mean their hopes to become something more hasn't gotten them much. Take for example when man came together to build the Temple of Babel. They wanted to make a name for themselves. They were actually going outside of God's will. When they did this, they tried to be on God's level, but his level for to great for us. (Remember Adam and Eve)
Anyway, they started making up their own gods who they could handle since they (mentally) couldn't get to Gods level. They settled for less (Thor, Zeus, Venus, Hermes).

Well it would be very unlikely for everyone to come up with the same god. Unless one actually existed, of course.

It's human nature to want to believe in something, to want to live for something, so much so that they create gods and worship them, obeying laws that the god supposedly made, and they believe that the god or gods control their very existence and what happens to them, their loved ones, and their possesions. If you thought that someone else controlled your destiny, wouldn't you want to please them? I myself believe in God.
