You didn't mention the size of the bowl, if it's a regular size bowl it's probably fine. If it's a giant bowl and you know it's way too much water there are a few things that might cause it, none would be life threatening that I can think of. If the dog is on medication and taking steroids for anything they drink more, and if the dog is diabetic they drink more (has strange body odor you would notice).

I would mention this to the owners if you have a chance to talk with them and see what they say. If they want to have you run dog to the vet I'd leave that up to them as long as there are no other odd behaviors happening.

My bearded collie also drinks a lot. Male dogs tend to pass more urine as they scent mark more than females so they need more water to fuel this.

Don't worry just make sure the water bowl is full at all times and he is let out as soon as you get up and ever few hrs(4 at most) during the day and again just before you go to bed.

This is on top of a good long walk remember!

This sounds excessive to me even if he's on dry food and the heating is full on.
But dogs do vary and Dalmations are prone to neurotic tendencies.
Of all the breeds I worked with in quarantine kennels they were the most highly strung of them all.
If he's not showing any other symptoms it's probably nothing to worry about in the short term
Check that he is eating O.K.and that his stools are normal.
Is there any way to can contact a member of the family that owns him and ask if this is what he usually does?
Either way you must tell the owner when you return the dog because if this is a new onset the dog needs to be checked out for diabetes/kidney disease/liver disease and a whole host of other possibilities depending on whether this is a young or old dog.

It could be a sign that he's stressed (because he's been left.) I'd take the water bowl up for a while & see what happens. Do you also have other pets? Some dogs will insist on drinking all the available water so that the others can't have it!

Aren't you the lucky one. I have a Dalmatian and he refuses to drink water. They need approx 4 litres a day and I have a real problem getting mine to drink any (I have to make tea for him). I wouldn't worry at all just ask the owners when they return if he normally drinks as much. I give mine tea not only for the liquid but mainly for medicinal reasons as they are prone to water infections. You can see my 9 year old dog, Splash, on my 360.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/dwJzV

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

It may be normal, depending on activity level and climate.

An early symptom of diabetes can be excessive thirst.

Incidentally, dalmations are the only species, besides man, that form uric acid stones in their urinary tract, which is much more likely if they are not well hydrated. Make sure there is always plenty of water available.

If he is living inside your house and you have your central heating on constantly then he will drink extra water. My dogs drink lots of water, ten times more when the central heating is on. I would not worry about it, mine is lazing about all day now and i can only take them for a long walk once a day. They are healthy and happy. Don't stress , it is quite natural. Have a lovely day :)))

Hi, My dalmation drinks alot of water too. They are prone to kidney infections so they tend to know this and make sure their systems are flushed out properly.. They are quite intelligent dogs. Dont worry about it.

It's alright sweety that is normal for him to drink that much wt, just make sure that he is urinating outside with that kind of amount of intake of water. He is more than likely MISSING his owners and that is why he is not very active to make it better for him just give him more attention and lots and lots of love and even try to play with him with a toy. THE BEST OF LUCK ON BABYSITTING
