Can I do it with paint or do I have another option

Aesthetically it may not suit you but certainly you can just use paint. It might be more to your liking to actually "divide" the wall with an appropriate strip of molding, attache vertically, and then divide the space with any different colors you choose. The choices are certainly up to you, but I probably would shy away from extremes.

You don't mention the reason you want to do this. Is it a largr area open (common) shared by two different situations? IE: Great Room/Kitchen; Living room/Dining area; Living room?

Is the flooring continuous or does it break or change at any point? Does the ceiling change in height at all in this space?

Do what the coyote did when he was chasing the road runner - just paint a large black tunnel and walk through the wall - it worked on the rocky cliff for the coyote.
