I'm 25, 6'2" 245 in weight. Most people don't consider me overweight. 7 years ago, I was 6'2" 230...7% body fat (3 sport athelete).
4 years ago, I was 6'2" 175...5% body fat... always running/cardio etc

The stressed out guy that I am hasn't put a string of 2 weeks of working out together in over 3 years. My eating habits have been awful, but I'm trying to change.

I'm nervous about what is safe and what isn't with my heart rate monitor. My resting heart rate is in the high 80s low 90s in my unhealthy state. I bought a heart rate monitor, played a pick up game of basketball... the heart rate monitor started beeping as I exceeded 200 beats per minute...and within my 4-5th minute playing basketball it reached 225, and I couldn't compete anymore and dropped out.

Is it unsafe to reach those levels, or is that a great workout?
I'm normally winded walking up a flight of stairs... but I want to be able to get in shape. I know I should start slow...but I love playing bball. is 200+ safe?

Unsafe.

Take the number 220 (beats per minute a babies heart beats)
Subtract Your Age from this number
This is the MAX your heart should beat per minute
220-25=195
You should work out at 65-85% of this number for 20-30 minutes to see results. That means your heart rate while working out should be b/w 127-166bpm

Don't give up BBall. BUT, you have a problem. Your heartrate got dangerously high. WAY too high, ok? Hold off on all exercise until you see your doc. You're only 25 years old. Let a doc do a good work up ASAP and then you follow his or her recommendations to the letter. You'll be healthier and BBall will be more fun. If you are doing steroids, tell your doc. It's important. Do NOT discontinue the steroids if you are taking any. They have to be weaned down to be safe. But, don't drink or smoke or do any recreational drugs until you see your doc. . . like TODAY. RN

If you are hitting 200+ just from playing bball, that means something is wrong. To me this says that you have a lot more fat and cholestorol in body than you think.

I would say go to your doctor. Tell the doctor exactly what you said above. And then go to the gym and jog, everyday. the only way to get in shape is to exercise.

No it's not safe. You should drop some weight before working out that much so there isn't such a strain on your heart.

You should probably see a doctor & discuss safe levels with him/her.

Try taking it at a slower rate until you start getting back in shape....walking does wonders and get a jump rope too.

That level is very unsafe, you are at risk for a major stroke at those levels. Even during exercise, you should only be in the low 100's.
