To accurately define a DC machine, several parameters need to be specified. These include:
- armature voltage
- base speed
- field weakened (top) speed
- power
- process overloads, both frequently occurring and occasionally occurring
- dimensional constraints like length, width, height, etc ... particularly if replacing an existing piece of equipment
- applicable standards regarding installation and/or operation
- environment
- process being driven

To determine what these are, there needs to be a good understanding of the process being driven and the facility capabilities (in terms of electrical loading and control).

"Occasional" overloads occur at the same frequency as a process 'wreck' or lightning strike. Anything that happens more often automatically classifies as "frequent".
