A drug of abuse is any drug that can alter your state of consciousness. Many of these are also therapeutic, but only if taken in the appropriate situation as mentioned by everyone above. Some are outright illegal. These constitute a drug of abuse.
Since your question was not what was drug abuse, but rather was is a drug of abuse, I have attempted to answer what you asked.

Drugs are ment to be taken when you are unwell and you want to get rid the illness. All the drugs not only cure the disease but they also have some sideeffects like causing giddness, sleepy, intoxicated, exhilarated etc etc. Some people enjoy these sideeffects of the medicine and hence even when they are well they start taking these drugs and they gradually go on increasing the dosage to get the level of kick they want. This is known as drug abuse.

I'm a nurse. It's simply using a drug(or anything in excess) for the primary use to get high. The person continues until they are tired and get help or die as a result. Unfortunately I see too often people lose their life for the drug. I think that the drug controls their life and they do any and everything to get the desired drug. I hope this helps you.

Drug abuse is taking any medication, prescriptions or non presciption drugs , or illegal drugs more than prescibed by your Doctor. Or just plain doing illegal drugs period. Taking more of anything in excess.....

Any substance that is used for something other than what it is designed for; in this country it has to be prescribed to be legal. A substance, legal or illegal, that alters your mental state, makes you euphoric or numbs pain.
Illicit(street)drugs-meth, PCP, cocaine, etc
Prescribed drugs-painkillers, muscle relaxers, anti-anxiety meds, weed in some areas
Legalized substances-tobacco, alcohol, weed in some areas
That's my opinion. Hope that's what your question meant. Good times
