Plasmodium spp can be diagnosed by taking blood slides and looking under microscope for the gametocytes or trophozoites of the parasites , using oil immersion.

generally a thick blood slide and a thin blood slide is made from the patients blood. these are then examined by a medical technologist for the plasmodium organism in any of the stages. all slides are usually double checked by a pathologist.

A blood smear taken at the time of fever or shivers will show the parasite in the RBC cells.
