Why was it not part of the original teachings of Christianity? And how come Protestants do not believe in it as well?

Nowhere. That is because it is not required. God loves the Roman Catholic people, but detests it's man made traditions and beliefs.

He is not pleased with the Roman Catholic System, and says "Come OUT of her, my people". (Revelations).

"2 Macc 12:38-46; Matt 5:25-26; 12:31-32 and 1 Cor 3: 11-15 do not as such establish the existence of purgatory. It can be validated in the light of divine justice and by the fact of Christians as praying (attested at least since the second century) and celebrating the Eucharist (attested at least since the third century) for their dead."
Since 150 AD various theologians have written of a place of purification. The Council of Trent maintained the doctrine of purgatory. The Second Vatican Council spoke about it.

Purgatory is neither mentioned nor implied (implicitly or explicitly) in the Bible. The Apocrypha, a set of books that appear in the Catholic canon but not in the Protestant bible, mentions a "place of purification," but Purgatory is not specifically mentioned there, either.

Dr. Boettner then gives us "Some Roman Catholic Heresies And Inventions" and the dates that these alleged "Apostolic" traditions were added to Roman Catholic theology &endash;
* The doctrine of Purgatory, established by Gregory I 593
* Purgatory proclaimed a dogma by Council of Florence 1439

The teaching of Pugatory is not Biblical.

Hi Matt, I can only answer this as a Catholic, Here is how I see it,
We have to go back to basics here, the first point to remember is that God is pure perfection and cannot stand sin,we forget how much we sin and if we are honest we are at times losing the seriousness of sin,but God does not change, those sins that offended Him 2,000yrs ago or even 100yrs ago still are offensive to Him, today in the same measure.
Having said that I think we need to reason out that as sin stains the soul and leaves it`s mark upon it, can we really say that repentence removes the stain of our sins? yes we are forgiven for the sin but the stain is something else.
So many today do not take this seriously enough,God will not allow anyone whose soul is in this condition to be in His Holy presence,it would be like trying to mix oil and water together.
So my conclusion is that there must be a place of purification and this in itself reflects the great mercy of God, we call it Purgatory from the Latin to purge, lastly there is a reference to this place in the Gospels that many other denominations conveniently overlook, Jesus told the parable of the wicked servant who was cast into the prison and would not get out untill the very last penny was paid.
This cannot be a reference to Hell as no-one ever gets out of there,so what else could this other place be if not Purgatory?
I do not of course expect you to adopt what I have said, but it does give food for thought.
Kind regards to you.

Purgatory is a doctrine in the Roman Catholic Church, which posits that those who die in a state of grace undergo a purification in order to achieve the holiness necessary to enter heaven. Does that mean that no one goes to hell.
Good question. What about trinity? Is it mentioned in the Bible? Never seen it there.

Even Catholics admit that Purgatory is not in the Bible.

The word rapture is not in the Bible either, but it is described in 1 Corinthians 15:51-57.

Protestants do not see evidence of purgatory in the scritpures and look to Jesus work on the cross to attone for their sins

all the claimed references I ever saw to it looked like stretches to me. The parable that said the unforgiving person will be thrown in jail until the last cent is paid for example would apply better to hell than purgatory.

I dont see it in the gospels, epistled or the book of Revelation

Purgatory is never mentioned.

It was invented by Catholics during the middle ages, one of their many "adjustments" to the religion. They say that the Pope is Christ's representative on earth, but how could he be if he is constantly correcting Jesus?

The Catholics, though, have evolved and don't have the same ridiculous trappings and heresies of the middle ages. I just wonder why they don't renounce the obviously silly and fictional beliefs that are still on the books.

purgatory is an invention of the catholic church.
there are 3 heavens according to Paul.
there are 7 heavens according to solomon
there are 9 degrees of the resurrection according to the LDS church and each degree of the ressurrection is like a different access and level of heaven.
Dante wrote about 9 circles of hell
but the bible describes several different variations of hell.

but when Jesus talked about "paradise" he said to one of the thieves on the cross, that you will be with me this day in paradise. this could be comparable to a "purgatory" because it might not be Hell and is separated from Heaven in some debates as well.

Dear Friend,

The Bible does not contain any techings about either purgatory or hell.

The bible says that:

Revalation 12:7And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

And in Job:

Job 1:6 One day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan [b] also came with them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

and again

Job 2:1 On another day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"
Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

through, the earth, down to earth. The Bibles teaching and promise of resurection to salvation through christ has been erroded by some denominations of Christianity. Accurate knowledge can only be gained through regular and diligent study of gods word the Bible.

Why not speak to your local methodist church who should be able to point you in the direction of a Bible study group or an Alpha couse. better still readi it yourself!

God Bless
