Usually when an older cat goes on the rug, they either have a heath problem or a catbox problem, sometimes if the cat box isn't to suit them they will go on the rug. And as far as the smell you can use white vineagar to help get out the stain and then use a small amount of shaving cream to freshen it up just rub it into the carpet after its dried and then use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot it up and sort of rub it in. this helps. and is a cheap thing to have on hand. I have 9 cats and 2 dogs all ages. Good luck.

Take the cat to the vet to check to see if she has an urinary tract infection or crystals in the urine. Both will cause a cat that is perfectly house trained to have accidents they can't help.

The vet or pet supply store will carry a few kinds of animal oder elliminator so they won't smell where they had went before. Off hand I can't remember the names of the products.

Until you can get a vet check done on the cat you can also try moving the litter box, or putting a second litter box in the area she seems to be using. Once the vet clears her health, if it it only behavioral you slowly start to move the extra box back to a place that works for both of you, I'm talking inch a day type movement.

Good luck :)

I have a friend that actually had to get new carpet even after having it professionally cleaned because her cat always went to the same spot.I think her cat had a urinary tract infection that started it then when that got better it still went in the spot where it smelled it.

I have used Pine Sol to clean areas where animals have urinated, while the carpet is still damp I cover the area with Baking Soda and let it sit over night and vacuum the area the next day.
Hope this helps.

First take your cat to your Vet for a check up, and tell your Vet what your cat is doing. They sell pet Oder removal and cleaning stuff at your pet store.
