Many cancers - if not all - are preventable.
- The less you include chemicals and junk food in your diet and the more you include fresh, natural food like fruits, vegetables and nuts, the further you stay away from cancer.
- Regular exercise has been proven to fight cancer.
- Foods rich in anti-oxidants help fight cancer. Anti-oxidants (in the simplest way) kill the poisons in your body (the oxidants that damage your body, which can cause cancer). Edible material that has some of the higest concentration of anti-oxidants includes green tea, walnuts and blackberries.
- Staying away from alcohol, drugs and tobacco helps prevent some kinds of cancer.
- Professions that have constant contact with chemicals, toxic waste and pollution can cause cancer.
- Some chemical substances used regularly on the body (deoderants, creams, gels, etc.) can cause cancer.
In short, eat natural and fresh food, drink lots of green tea, exercise, and stay away from toxins and pollutants and hopefully you'll be fine.

To a degree it is preventable and treatable in the early stages like most cancers. Not smoking helps but bear in mind the air we breath and food we eat has carcinogens in it. Gee how did that get there? Genes has a lot to do with it also. This question like most seeks to minimize the healthy effects of commonsense, diet and exercise as well as periodic checkups that can catch small things before they develop into big EXPENSIVE things requiring serious expensive medical care. Which is cheaper? AIDS medication or a condom? Not smoking or chemo and radiation therapy? An ideal weight or high blood pressure medicine and dialysis? A toothbrush, paste and floss or a root canal, post and crown? Real simple. While it's unfortunate a lot of people with no bad habits do develop serious diseases it's safe to say smokers and obese individuals have a higher probability. How about this: Over the last 60 years or so and billions in research dollars the best we get is don't drink, smoke and get exercise? Where is the cancer vaccine or is more money to be made from keeping someone alive and the disease at bay? Knocking "Obama-care" as some individuals refer to it sound fun but it's really idiotic under the surface. There are families around paying $1000 per month for health insurance that has a deductible so high they have to be dying for it to be useful. Ultimately it's useless. Is addressing that issue and a healthy lifestyle what the Republicans are opposing? Because it sure sounds like it. Especially when all they can come up with is a tax credit for a lousy $2000 against an annual bill of $12000 while leaving the high deductible intact. That's not much of a plan. Too bad their constituents just listen to sound bites and no further.

ummm...iam a little sceptical about people's answers here especially the ones with yoga and antioxidants.... but anywayz to ur questions i think it would be an yes to many..but not all... for example if u take some of the cancers they are aldready determined that u will have it ... for example if u take breast cancer the chances of people getting it is very high if u have a gene called BRCA .. and well if u wanna prevent it well u could do a prophylactic mastectomy
and the same goes true for people with family history of uterus or cervix cancer u can have them removed if u have completed ur family
and yes yes stopping smoking and heavy drinking but if the harm is done then nothing can be done.... did u know cancer however big the tumour is actually started from a single cell which underwent a mutation....
and there are a few diseases which are preventable and which lead to cancer .... chronic gastritis caused by a bacteria called h.pylori actually results in stomach cancer ... and 75% of the world pop. have it ... u can easily clear it out with antibiotics... and hepatitis B which has a vaccine results in liver cancer... and AIDS u have safe sex and prevent it u probably won't get something called Kaposi sarcoma which is a cancer of the skin and the mucus membranes ....
and the list goes on and on ... but most are not practical for example u don't wanna have skin cancer don't go out in the sun at all just alwayz stay in a concrete room
all in all it's just not practical u just live a short time maybe 90 years in india for example the life expectancy in india is around 65 years ..... but hey u wanna stay inside a room or stop alcohol or run around cutting breasts off .. just so that u can live another 10 years nah i don't think so......
cheeeeeeeeeeeerio live happy first it's better than living healthy <------- slogan for all cancer preventing junkies

No, it is not preventable.
All you need to do is look at the number of childhood cancers in which none of the above answers apply at all.
All ages even a fetus can develop cancer. There is no known reason why one person will develop cancer while another will not.
You can eat healthy, make sure it is all natural, excercise, never smoke or drink, never been exposed to carcinogens, not have a genetic predispostion . . and you can still get cancer. (Look at some of the nutritional gurus who have written books and promoted 'cures' for cancer . . only to die later from cancer themselves).
There are no gurantees that you won't get cancer at some point in your life. But, that does not mean you should not live a healthy lifestyle . . a balanced diet, excercise, do not drink or smoke to excess, stay away from carcinogins, check your family history . . have regular check ups, know your body, report any lumps or bumps or anything unusual to your doctor. Cancer is not preventable, but if you are healthy you have a better chance at survival . . or finding it early enough to completely remove it.

Depends on the type of cancer, I think. Smoking can cause lung cancer, but so can other things that humans cannot control. Doctors suggest not working with chemicals and radiation if certain cancers run in your family. But sometimes the chemicals are there without your knowing it. For example: Mold can grow inside your walls and cause things like seizures and cancer.

It depends by not smoking you can atleast prevent lung cancer not only to the person that smokes but to the people around who do not smoke and have to put up with this. Many passive smokers end up having lung cancer. My mum was a very healthy person always eating very healthy she did not smoke a cigarette in her life and never drunk alchohol. She was a very fit person but she was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer on Dec 2004 but unfortunately she lost her battle to cancer on 27 May 2006.

As stated above, certain types are preventable. There is also a vaccine now for cervical cancer. In some types, however, the cause has yet to be determined.

yes infact most cancers arise due to preventable causes.
Smoking is perhaps the most important cause leading to cancers as a whole, and those of the lung, kidneys, oral cavity, larynx and oesophagus in particular.
Alcohol also predisposes to cancers of the liver and aerodigestive tract.
A low fibre, high fat diet predisposes to cancers of colon and breast.
These are just a few examples, quitting smoking, alcohol and eating a proper diet can help prevent many a cancers, but not all.

You can live a healthy lifestyle which may help in preventing cancer, but I don't think that you can prevent it altogether. If members of your family have suffered from it, then your risk maybe greater, also we are surrounded by pollution, which all contribute to the possibility of cancer.
