"like somebody with oldtimer's disease, who doesn't remember what's good for them, I glance at my T-shirt."
I'm not sure about the meaning of "what's good for them", does the character mean that, what kind of dress suits him, or what else?

It means that the person looks at what he is wearing in a perplexed way as he is not sure that it is appropriate. Oldtimer's disease is a reference to Altzheimer's whereby people no longer realise what is correct apparel, for instance they will wallk out of their house wearing nightclothes in the middle of the day when it is snowing or wear underpants on their head. A lady walking out wearing just a nightdress in freezing temperature because she is senile would not realise it is not good for her.

people with Alzheimer's disease do not remember somethings like their name where they live their relatives so in a way they don't remember whats good for them, so the character was glancing at his shirt and couldn't remember anything about it
