Atheists don't believe in god, doesn't want him to "play a role". I think you should pose your question to theists as many christians believe god answers prayer and helps them through tough times, much like a superhero would.

This is not limited to atheists or free thinkers only. Many religious persons regard God as a magician, which He is not. God is the Creator and his cosmic laws carry out His will. The magic bit is an ancestral relic of way past history whereby, associated deities with, arbitrariness, fickleness and throwing nasty fits, if humanity did not do their bidding. Some primitive people even placated Him with sacrifices to prevent Him from venting His wrath upon them. Of course this is nonsense.

The superhero stuff would be the proof that the free thinkers and atheists ask for.
Its absence is proof that there is not a god.
