Moderate use of artificial sweeteners is safe. In recent years the safety of the long-term use of aspartame is being questioned after a number of research studies have shown adverse effects with its long-term use. A word of caution, pregnant women, nursing mothers, children and persons suffering from phenylketonuria should not consume aspartame.
Another sweetner called sucralose has an excellent safety profile as over 100 scientific studies conducted over a 20-year period have shown that it is safe for use as a sweetening ingredient. Among the regulatory bodies that have evaluated the safety of sucralose are the U.S. FDA, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA); the Health Protection Branch of Health and Welfare Canada; Food Standards Australia/New Zealand, the European Unions Scientific Committee on Food, and a host of others in South America and Asia. Sucralose is now permitted for use in over 60 countries.

During the first Iraq war Coke sent over pallets of diet coke for the troops, because of storage difficulties they were left in the hot sun for 4-6 days. When they were given to the troops many were violently ill and it was discovered that artificial sweeteners reacted to the hot climate.
Because of this I am very wary of 'zero sugar' products, they are a lab product which in my mind is not as safe as a natural product - they work in a lab but how safe are they in the real world?

There are two I know of that are healthy
1. Xylitol--you'll find it in specialty stores and it measures cup for cup like sugar...very popular. The body actually produces xylitol itself.
2. Stevia- a very fine powder that is much sweeter than sugar and better for drinks
