I don't see why it's a contradiction. A contradiction is only valid if two theses are being held at the same time. The former (eye for an eye) was shown by Christ to be an invalid paradigm for human relationships.

The Old Testament quote an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth did not mean you were supposed to pluck someone's eye out. Please read the context of the passage. What it is saying is that you should not exact more punishment than for what the crime was worth.
Think of it this way, an eye for an eye, not a life for an eye.
Essentially it is saying if someone steals a loaf of bread, don't give them 20 years in prison for it.
Hence, no contradiction.

Eye for eye and tooth for tooth refered to the ancient optician and dental practices. The actual quote is from an advert in 4995 BC which read:
"Eye for eye and tooth for tooth, we replace old for new at the body-shop"
Of course, a thousand years later people had forgotten about the body-shop and misinterpreted the advert when it was found one day scrawlled on the wall of a cave.
In about 0 BC the body-shop was started up again (without knowledge of the shop with the same name existing previously) and, in about 15 AD a young man called Jesus was hired by the Youth Advertising House for the Wayward, Erratic and Hostile (YAHWEH). He came up with the 'turn in the other cheek' slogan, meaning if you had any spare body parts you could donate them at the body-shop.
The 'turn in the other cheek' slogan was so sucessful it was the title of a hit movie in 40AD celebrating the life of the most sucessful advertiser in ancient history.
Unfortunately, people began misquoting the 'turn in the other cheek' slogan.
Anyway, as you can see, both quotes from the Bible have the same origin and mean essentially the same thing, so there is no contradiction!

p.s.: do you know that the last time the catholic church castrated choir boys ( the castrati ) to retain their " angelic " voices for the papal choir was 1938 ?
