My backsplash wall is red. The rest of my kitchen walls are creamy off white. My appliances are stainless and black.
Thanks

I would go to the store and pick up a variety of the swatches available for the counter tops and hold them up against the different colors in your kitchen and see which one you like the best. Going with a neutral color would be smart because you are more apt to change the paint color later on then the counter tops.

I will assume you have a modern style as you mention stainless steel. That opens a lot of possibilities. The "safest" choice would be the same creamy white as your walls. Black would be quite acceptable and if you're very bold a contrasting colour like yellow would really add youth and energy to the space.
I would look at books and magazines and web sites till I found a combination I loved, then go for it!

What color are the kitchen cabinets? and the floor?
Think about wood counter top, it could warm up the room and it's nice with red and black

black, nice contrast with red and cream, also gives the effect of appearing clean, when it is not so clean.
