YOur reap what you sow. The lonely ones probably were nasty people when they were young and don't treat their younger family members well. So when they are old, the mistreated youngsters abandon them as a revenge.

WHY ????
this is not a question we will be able to answer, but maybe a thing we should change.
If your curious about it then meet some elderly in your area, help them, talk to them give them a bright hour in the day. Take them out.
WHY ???
should you care, cause maybe someday you end up lonely and would you not love it that some other Mother advises her kids to be friends to those that need it the most.
My Daughter 22 has so many uncles and aunties now since i took her to an elder home cause she asked me the same questions. She meets up with all of them combined them to a group and once a week picks them up and goes into town and sits down in a cafe or restaurant and they chit chat, she brings them to the doctors, or to the graveyrad to visit the graves of loved ones.
If we all stopped asking why we could make the world a bid brighter for those that are lonely ...

Either the elder is 97 or so, and all their friends have passed on, or that's the way the elderly person wants his or her life to be.
But then again, it's harder for them to meet new people when they can't move around as much as they'd like to. a lot might have to do with their personalities.

I think most of the people around them are family, and some elderly don't have as much family as others.

I think it's mainly to do with luck, and of course, how big a family they were from, and how good their realtionships were with those people--I've been taking my kids to a nursing home with s group of their friends and some of the people there seem so lonely, and well, sad...when I'm getting towards the end of my life I hope I have family and friends around, and I hope I'm happy.

It depends on our attitude and outlook of life. If we cultivate more friendship and relation, and look on old age as a time of maturity and experience, we have lots of loving people around us.
If old age makes us mean and unfriendly, we live lonely.

It is possible that some of these lonely geriatrics simply never had children.
Not everyone is married you know.
