If i connect the audio from an hd box to my TV (i have dvi only no hdmi) using a dvi audio cable will the sound quality be hd?

First, you TV has only two speakers. So, audio from your TV will always be stereo, regardless of the cable you use (DVI or HDMI).

If you want multi-channel audio then you need to buy an AV Receiver or a home theater in a box.

No...you have to set them up different. The DVI is just a better form of picture. The best you can get right now is HDMI. But DVI is second best. You still want to go from audio outs to audio In's on your TV or VCR or Surround system. If you want better sound. Then you want a THX system. Dolby is second best.
