Hi, I wrote in here a while back about my dalmation doing the same thing. I was told it was actually harmless and they cant get sick from it. But I would ask your vet, im sure they wouldnt mind advising you over the phone? I thought I had figured out why my dog did it, I thought it may have been the rabbit droppings (yuck) and at first I was quite upset but apparently its normal for dogs to do so. She is very healthy , she even eats hankies out of the bin! She is just being a rebellious teenager i think.LOL. Good luck though if you are really concerned.

Dogs are notorious for picking up and eating obnoxious stuff they find in the fields. If you show enough displeasure by eg shouting 'no' very loudly in their face and tapping the top of their nose reasonably firmly but only just enough to persuade them from desisting they will get the message. It may of course drive their activities underground; yes, they are that sneaky. I don't know how old your dog is. The youngsters are worse for eating s--t but apparently it can be a sign of some kind of deficiency in older dogs. If it is an older dog you might want to let the vet know and have him/her checked out ..... the dog, that is. If all else fails and it really is a problem rather than a neurosis (sorry) you could try a muzzle.
Kind regards,
Peter S

I'm sure i read somewhere that sometimes animals get minerals they need from eating mud. So it may not be that daft. Assuming youre feeding your dog properly, I would let him get on with it. Maybe supplement his diet a bit or try a different dog food.

Check his diet, they need minerals. Certain tinned food are absolute cr*p and contain none. You can buy a tub of minerals at pet shops
