You actually have to physically check your licence and see what entitlements you have. On the Photocard licence you will see a list of letters e.g. B, C1 etc. on the front
This link to the Direct Gov website explains what your entitlements are:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022547
You can drive up to a 7.5 tonne lorry on a car licence, but check your entitlements to be sure, as the licencing changed if you passed your test after 1997

In the UK it depends when you passed your test.
When I passed (in 1990) vehicles up to 7.5tonnes Gross-Vehicle-Weight (i.e. fully laden) were permitted.
Since then the requirements have changed, so new drivers will only be licenced for vehicles up to 3.5tonnes GVW.
Check the paper counterpart for your licence - it will state what categories you can drive, as well as listing what vehicles fall in each category.

Depends upon how old your licence is. If it is relatively new, then 3.5 tonns. However, if it is an older licence you should still be able to drive 7.5 Tonns.
