You are correct, there are many Christians who do not have a basic understanding of their faith and doctrinal tenants, nor any kind of historical content or setting, but I would venture to say that that could be said of any religion. Most followers do not understand why they believe what they believe, and that includes Atheists.

I'm a Christian, and I try very hard not to be ignorant about other beliefs. Of course, I came to Christianity the long way, having been raised Jewish, then been Buddhist, Pagan, Agnostic, then studied Christianity from many different denominational viewpoints before finding the faith path that made the most sense to me.
I too am annoyed by people who judge other people's faiths from a standpoint of ignorance and intolerance - regardless of whether said judgemental ones are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, Buddhist, Atheist, or whatever, and regardless of what they are judging.

Dear Jewish Guy--I'm more interested in why you are bothered? How have you become educated regarding Christianity? How will being less ignorant help anyone. Knowledge brings responsibility and knowledge puffs up which may cause you to be bothered more by the outcome of such lack of ignorance.

Dear Friend,
It would probably be inacurate to say 'Many of you' A few people who claim to be Christians may show a low level of tolerance for other beliefs on occasion. But Jesus taught not to judge, and also to show an abiding love for our fellow man.
Matthew 19:19 (Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,'[a] and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'[b]"
Luke 6:Judging Others
37"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
I hope this answers your question
God Bless

Many people grow up following what their parents believe. Sometimes, though, this is not enough. They make assumptions, and don't really think about their faith outside of what they have always known. If something is contrary to what they have always been taught then, they simply aruge against it, often not even considering the other side, or doing some research to really think or learn about their religion.

Most of us are not ignorant. You just seem to have run across the few that are.
However,I don't think that enough Christians are as well versed in Biblical teachings as they should be.
