Anytime of the year is great to come down under.
As long as you don't venture too far north in the summer.(Officially starts 1st Dec for three months)
The most perfect time is Spring from 1st September.
~~ Fly in to Sydney, have a week there; so many sights to see.
(you could do a bridge climb of the Sydney Harbour Bridge or take a cruise on the Harbour)
~~ Then fly (just over an hour) north to the Gold Coast.
Spring here is beautiful one day, perfect the next.
Even our winter is wextremely mild.
We have much to see here also; the pristine beaches, stunning hinterland, sanctuarys, (three) major theme parks, great nightlife (including Jupiters Casino), world-classs resorts and restaurants.
~~ And if you have time it is only an hour to Brisbane by train.
Brisbane has a lot to offer as well!
I've forgotten Melbourne (a flight south from Sydney), Melbourne is very trendy; great shopping, markets, pubs, clubs and fabulous restaurants.
And of course everywhere you go the Aussie's will welcome you.
I've found some sites you might like to have a look at before coming.
What's on in Sydney; this is a great site covering everything a tourist might need to know about the city.
Maps, accommodation, events, attractions, entertainment, transport, dining, shopping etc:
http://www.whats-on-in-sydney.com/whatsnew.asp?ID=71
A similar site about the Gold Coast:
http://www.gold-coast.net/
And Melbourne:
http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/info.cfm?top=259&pg=3059
We haven't touched on the West, Perth is a great city too.
A five hour flight from the east though.
http://www.australianexplorer.com/perth_sights.htm
And then there is Canberra, our nation's capital.
http://www.australianexplorer.com/australian_capital_territory.htm
All of the sites above have acommodations too.
Ahh, so much to see, so little time!

Summertime is the best time to visit southern Australia and winter is the best time to be in the north. The wet season in the north is from October to April and the dry season May to September. Summer in central Australia can be horrifically hot with temperatures over 40°C regularly.
In winter, Sydney and Brisbane are mild but further south it is cool to cold. Winter/spring are also the dry season in Sydney and Brisbane. There is a very good reason the Olympic Games were held in Sydney in the second half of September.
Where you go depends on how much time you have. Sydney is a great starting point. Alice Springs and Uluru are in the centre and Cairns is a good starting point for the Barrier Reef and the rainforests.

I have made 12 trips to Australia over the past ten years, all at different times, and to different parts of the country. Tropical queensland and the NT are stinking hot and humid from December to March, and unless you like to swim in sweat, it is best to plan around the weather there. As for the rest of Australia, any time is the best time. Take sweaters (jumpers) for cool evenings, dress casual, and have a great time. Take plenty of sunscreen and good walking shoes, even if you do not plan to backpack, as you will do a lot of walking in the major cities. Do not plan on driving around the major cities, parking can be difficult to find and pricey. Use public transportation. In spite of recent fare increases, public transportation in Sydney remains one of the worlds great bargains. Especially look forward to taking the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, spend a day there, and enjoy the beaches and resteraunts. Stay on the outskirts of the major cities. My personal favorite city remains Adelaide. It is convenient to the wine areas; the Claire and Barrossa to the north, Langhorne Creek and McClaren Vale to the south, and has great beaches, great food, and wonderful, friendly people.
Avoid the tours in Australia. It is a better bargain to rent a car and get off the beaten track. While Uluru (Ayers Rock) is worth seeing, it is a two day trip there from anywhere through some truely awesome desert, if you are in to that. A better way to "tour" is to take the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth (four days of first class luxurey, no telephones, no tv, and a driver. Perth is a booming capital city on the Indian Ocean. Wonderful food (Track down some dhufish- fantastic!) Great wines produced in the Margerat River district, south of Perth, too.) Enjoy. If you need a tour guide, call me!

summer time in Oz is now, december to february. At the moment the weather is a bit unpredictable. For a holiday, i would suggest the best time and place to go is North East Queensland in late autumn to winter (april to about august). Because it's a semi-tropical area winter tends to have the most stable weather and the temperature is warm but not heatwave style. Plus you can go swimming in the ocean at that time of year without fear of stingers, plus winter is humpback whale migration season on the east coast. In summer it's a tiny bit monsoonal and there can be the odd tropical cyclone. Anywhere north of about Mackay would be the north east coast. if you're into something a bit upmarket try the Whitsunday Islands; there are resorts galore, plus you can still camp out on deserted white sand beaches if you want.

the best time is spring that is between September-November. It's not that cold and definitely not sooo hot... Well, I think except in Queensland where there are plenty of sunshine.
The best place is in Queensland if your after the view. Flowers bloom in spring time especially in Towoomba. Or you can go to Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef. But if you wanted to shop go to Melbournem it's cheaper out there.
If you are an adventurer. You can rent a car and drive all around Aussie. It's a long long drive but it's worth doing. Aussie is the place to see.

However the far north of Australia like Broome West Aust, Darwin which is a must as the state government put on free concert for the whole state and bring the best bands from Australia wide. It is free, Dont go to Kakadu National Park but Litchfield it 10 times better.. North Queensland it is like summer and spring. The best places are starting with Qld Cairns, Mackay Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and all the tropical islands off it. It has the barrier reef too. New South Wales Byron Bay Blues Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival and all along the coast. Sydney is a rat race it huge like Chigago and be carefyl travelling West of Sydney hardly anybody speaks english. BLue Mountains are nice in NSW near Penrith. Canberra out capital is like leggo land and freezing. Adelaide is the city of churches it pretty and the German town of Hahndoff is really nice along with their Barossa Valley. Hobart is Capital of Tasmania it very scenic and absolutely beautiful with its historic buildings. You need a week at the least there,. Right now is always the best time to come to Oz.The best place to go is Sydney, because most of the planes unload there and you can get from Sydney to anywhere else on a domestic flight.
Summer is now.If you intend visiting northern Australia, winter is probably better, since it gets very hot in Oz during summer.Anywhere in Oz during the summer it can be extremely hot inland and overseas travellers are advised to use air conditioned transport if they are touring around.
Sydney and Melbourne have it all.Queensland is for sun and beaches.Tasmania is for ecological tourists.South Australia and West Australia for deserts, crows and anachronistic politicians in favour of mining.N.T. for crocs and cold beer.

It depends what sort of weather you want. Our seasons are reversed to the US, so if you came during Dec - Feb, it would be Summer here, and very hot (depending where you went).
I would recommend Queensland for the theme parks (Dreamworld, Movie World, Seaworld, Wet & Wild World) and for the Gold Coast. Victoria is great for Melbourne and its shopping. Sydney is a great touristy place.
If you aren't a fan of the heat, trying coming in Spring (September - November) or Autumn (March - May) as both are quite mild with weather.
Looking forward to seeing you!

make sure you come to Western Australia. You can swim with Whale Sharks, do the Ningaloo Reef, better than the Great Barrier Reef (less commercial), and Cable Beach up in Broome. It may cost you a little more, but if you stay and work here a little while, you will come out better for it (financially and experience-wise),
It's all good though. Australia rocks!
