I posted last Friday after my cat got stuck under our couch. I put the couch down on him on accident, he ran and hid for like an hour but then went back to his normal routine. Now I notice he has been shaking his head quite a few times a day, especially after I pick him up. I've also notice he's been scratching at his ear periodically. I plan on taking him to the vet ASAP, but does anyone know what could be wrong?? I'm hoping this has nothing to do with when he got stuck under the couch. Other than the shaking and scratching, he's acting like his usual self.

His neck is ok..when he was hiding under our bed, I was moving one of his toys from side to side and he was moving his neck just fine, so I don't think he hurt his neck.

Hi honey. Sounds like ear mites to me. You will need special medicine for that. You can check for mites by looking carefully into his ears. If he has mites you will see what looks like lots of very dark, dirty looking ear wax.
You can clean his ears by using some warm baby oil and cotton swabs. Get a good supply of swabs and some warm baby oil, wrap him up in a thick towel so he can not scratch you and check his ears. If they are dirty you will have to clean them before the medicine can even get in there to do any good. Just keep wiping with a clean swab each time until you get most of it out. He may not like this but some of my cats have actually purred and seemed to appreciate it.
He is shaking his head because they are itching and driving him nuts and he does not know what else to do. Please do have them treated as he is very miserable with them and they can lead to deafness if left untreated. Ear mite medicine is not very expensive and your vet may sell it to you without even seeing the cat. The kind you buy at the store is usually not very good although a place like PetSmart might have something good.

It may have something to do with the couch, but that may just be a coincidence. If the inside of the ear ended up getting fluid retention from the injury in may irritate the cat.

Sounds a lot like an ear infection or mites to me, both will need some medication to clear it up. Try to keep him from scratching at it as much as possible, they can tear up the skin with their nails and add a bacterial infection on top of what ever started the problem.

The vet will be able to tell you for sure after a quick look and maybe an ear swab to look for mites.

Hello... sure it has nothing to do with the couch to be honest... i used to be a vet nurse and as far as i remember the main causes of head shaking are ear mites/ infections or tooth troubles... if the cat is dribbling too it would indicate teeth which can get expensive if removals are needed but if it's ear mites normally drops will suffice- but an infection will need antibiotics too - anyway my advise is to go see the vet ...

While I'm sure that being stuck under a couch wasn't a pleasant experience for him, I don't think the head-shaking has anything to do with it. It sounds to me like he may have ear mites. Do his ears look dirty inside? I don't know if there is any over-the-counter medicine for ear mites. You vet will give you something to put in his ears to kill the mites.

Look in his ear that he is scratching. Is there a black, waxy substance? If so, it is probably ear mites.

He needs to go to the vet, to determine if the mites have caused an infection, and to have the ear properly cleaned and treated.

Then, you can start using the monthly treatment that protects against mites, fleas and ticks, other parasites, and worms.

He may have ear mites and you never noticed it before, you may have just been keeping a closer eye on your cat because of what happened.

Sounds like ear mites to me also, check for the black tar inside his ear & bald patches right behind and below the outside of his ear.

Look in his ear. If you see something that looks like black dirt, it's probably ear mites.
