files in my word have been changed into boxes and circles etc. can i recover my work. please. what cause it.?

ms word files are damaged. almost boxes and circles. how to repair.

I think might be because of the coding of the words. Try this:-
go to View tab at the top. Under View tab, go to Encoding and then select Western European (ISO).

May b u don't have the fonts used in file
try this:
open ur file, press ctrl+A (select all)
change the fonts to Arial or any other
