The neighborhood is pretty safe, regular middle-class area. The location kind of sucks, though, unless you're working right there in the Valley too. Traffic in and out of the Valley is horrible at rush hour because a lot of people take the cheaper housing in the Valley and the higher paying jobs in LA. I don't think the savings are worth suffering in traffic every day.

If you are thinking about buying a house there, buy in the area referred to as West Van Nuys or Lake Balboa. It's a bit nicer, and the homes hold their value better.

It is not the worst area, but there is a fair share of crime in the area. Maybe it comes with it being the porno capital of the US (90 - 95% of all US porn is manufactured in Van Nuys)

When I asked this question a year ago (diffrent area) I was just starting out... a wise person told me to do my best to make the things I needed myself. yes, its true sometimes you need to get a special crystal/herb for a certain spell... but many of the things you need for magic(k) can be found very cheap either 1) in nature (after asking the nature spirits permision of course!) 2) local craft shop (great for cheap colored candels... abalone/lion's paw shells ($2 as oppsed to $10+!!) little metal "cauldrons" ought to be appearing now for halloween... artifical flowers and colored cloths for alters... wooden disks to paint your own pentacals... and sometimes even natural semi-precious gems that are sold in the jewlery depot. You can find magickal items anywhere.. and don't nessisarily be in a rush. I got my altar totaly free on garbage day a month back... I've been waiting almost a year now! I didn't even realize what I had brought into my apt. until I had it set up. Solid oak table with storage inside for all my tools... so just trust youself. Eventually you may find you have everything you need for magic even without the help of "tools". Blessings and good luck. :)

It used to be solidly middle class (read white) now much of it's heavily Latino. There are pockets that are pretty nice, like on the border of Sherman Oaks. There isn't a significant amount of crime, probably because the Police and county court houses are there.

There's nothing glamorous about it, if that's what your hoping for.

it really depends on "where" in van nuys you are interested in living. my suggestion is that if you are considering moving to this area, consider moving to sherman oaks, studio city or encino. they are nicer areas closer to ventura blvd. and you can actually go for a walk after the sun goes down without necessarily looking over your shoulder.

I definitely think there are sections that are shady, but overall it's a normal middle class neighborhood that just has a more gritty appearance when compared to Studio City or Sherman Oaks.
