I agree, it's very cruel. Like others have said, they shouldn't own a dog if they don't have the patience to train it. My 14 week-old puppy was vocal. He absolutely loved hearing the sound of his own voice I think. He used to bark at the walls, oddly. It took me less than a week to put a stop to that.
I also think it's cruel to surgically alter a dog. Neutering or spaying is ok. I'm talking about having the ears and tails cropped. Every time I see a dog that has had this done I can't help but feel sorry for it. How would you like it if you're parents thought something about you were ugly, and had your ears, nose, and butt cut off as a child? Horrifying.

I know someone who had, yes had to do that to her dogs. She bred Std Poodles, and when she started her kennel she was basically out in the country, over time, the city she was near started developing around her. New people moved in, and these people didn't appreciate the fact that they were moving into an area where there was an existing dog kennel. The neighbours started to complain about the barking from the kennel, and my friend was faced with moving her kennel(not feasible - due to money constraints), getting rid of her dogs that she took the time and energy to breed and show( she was a responsible breeder, maybe 1 litter a year, all dogs in her care were shown to Championships), or the less severe de-bark them. She chose to de-bark them as she couldn't afford to pack up her kennel and move it, nor could she part with some of her older dogs. She did place some of the dogs into homes, so they would not have to undergo the surgery. So cruel it may be, sometimes people have no options. Oh and at the time, bark collars were not as easily found as they are now, and what she may have been able to find would have been the 'shock bark collars'(not an acceptable choice to her).
Even when de-barked the dog does still have a bark, it just is not as loud, sounds more like a dog barking from a few blocks away, as opposed to right beside you.

People remove/ alter a dog's bark because, and I agree with everyone else, they want a quick fix. These people are either too lazy or lack the confidence to train their animal.
For a squirter, add a LITTLE bit of vinegar or Tabasco Sauce to the water. They don't like the smell or flavor, even the breeds that like to bite at the water stream, and it won't harm them. Soon, just the noise of the water in the squirter will suffice.
A rolled up newspaper smacked on your hand is also a good deterrent. The noise is unsettling to them.
Training only takes a little bit of time and is highly effective, but MUST be consistent!!

I have two dachshunds...and they bark a lot ...(that is what spray bottles were invented for -although, now they seem to enjoy the spray...they run in and out ..yapping with tails wagging a hundred miles an hour .. : / )..they are a barky breed..and I love them never-the-less.. I would never consider removing their bark...or putting on one of those shock collar thingys on them to get them to stop......
I imagine vets do this to keep the dog from being killed, abused ,or thrown away (placed in shelters)
you just have to figure there is a lot of stupid mean people in this world... and they will do anything they want no matter how cruel it maybe.........it is just a shame these people can't have the same treatment they have given to their pets.......

The dog can still bark, it is just muted. Not a big deal! I have a demarked dog and SHE couldn't care less.
Which is more cruel, a family having to give up the dog or give up their home, or debarking? A dog going to the shelter, or debarking?
I agree, training should be tried first. But growing up showing Shelties, some dogs just CANNOT be quiet. Is it better for them to be hollered at all the time?
It really doesn't bother the dogs, and if it needs to be done to stay in its home, then do it, better then the dog being euthanized in a shelter.

I have no idea. I rely on my dogs' barks to alert me to danger. I have no doubt that they would alert me to a burglar or fire in my home. Yeah, sometimes it's a pain. Like when I'm on the phone and can't hear because they are barking, but the benefits far outweigh the down side. I have GSD's, and they are just doing what they think they're job is. But, for any dog, barking is one of the ways they communicate. I don't think that it is just to deny them of that.

because they buy a dog because it is cutee with out bothering to find out if it is generally a vocal breed or not. and like the first answer says: they'd rather do a quick fix then take the time to train.
i got my dog to stop barking in less than a week. ahhh the power of NO

why is it cruel? I have never done it to a dog but why is it cruel? do the vets not use anesthetics? is the dog in pain? are the surgical tools dull or dirty?

i don't know. no one knows apart from the very cruel people who do it!
if they can't control their dog they shouldnt have one.
and the dog probably barks mostly out of fear.
such a shame
