His desk is near mine in the office, he almost never says hello. Different story is when the boss is around, fake laughs come out very easily whatver the boss says.
I shouldn't care I know but this guy is really nasty, he thinks he's all that. Most of the time I avoid saying hello but I don't like, on the opposite I don't like to say hello aloud so he's forced to answer.
He does like this with many people, especialy with people who can't help with his "carrier"...

How many jobs have you had? Honestly, these are minor complaints. I have worked in places where they steal your stapler, and will replace your printer cartridges with empty ones. The EEOC have rules against unpleasant work environments. Honestly, you have three choices; either figure out what their problem is (be a friend, maybe read a pshyc book or two), ignoring them, or find another job. Whatever you do, maintain a level head an don't get emotional. Your supervisor has probably had to deal with "serious" conflicts when so and so stole my pen, and doesn't want to hear about it. So unless an occasional plate of brownies will smooth it over, I'd start looking for another place to work. Don't quit till you have a new job, and when you tell your supervisor why you are leaving, explain (nicely) that unacceptable coworker behavior lead you to another place of employment.

not everyone like to say hello. Maybe you on the other hand , just don't like being ignored. Something seems to be more than just the hello that's bothering you. You mentioned how he lites up when needed to shine. Are you worried over a particular job promotion he may get over you? Not trying to sound rude or mean, but it seems that this guy not wanting any part of you, triggers a resentment. You must understand, some people choose who they want in their lives. And sometimes we are passed up. If you were friends with everyone you have ever met, by far you would have the most friends in the world. Just say hello, if he doesn't answer...move on...soon enough you'll see that it's not worth getting wired up ove. If it does bother you that much...you need not say anything at all...so therefore you will not get rejected for your thoughtful Good Morning to start the day.

The way I see it is that you were taught to say hello/good morning... etc. Ignore this guy, he has no impact on your pay check. Just say hello, good morning or whatever and leave it at that at least you would have said hello and satisfied yourself that you were proper and professional. Why do you need him to say it back, he's gotta live with that. Be polite and know not to expect anything back and leave it at that. Do not stoop to his level and do not allow him to ruin your day nor your mood. He's NOT worth that. People like that always prove to be their worst enemies. They wreck themselves. Forget him! And don't stoop to his level by not offering a greeting or any other convo that's directly related to performing your duties. You do not need his greeting nor convo to conduct your job now do you?

maybe he just has an introvert personality. if you feel that it's a big deal in your part, it's actually harder for them. the best thing to do is for you to make the first move.

try to know his profile -- what he likes, what he is up to. just don't go any further because they are also a bit sensitive, might accuse you of being nosy. when you get to know his likes and dislikes, his passions and his turnoffs, you're on the right track. approach him and open a topic that you sure would not offend him, rather interact well to what you've opened.

who knows, he just might be the best bud in the office.

It's career and why do you keep speaking to him if he's like that? It won't make your paycheck get any larger if you're more considerate of him than he is of you. Just do your job and keep away from him. How he acts when the boss comes around is his business and also doesn't have anything to do with you. You're creating a stressful situation unnecessarily and you're the one paying the price for it.

there is ONE person in every office, they are called "BROWNNOSES" YOU AND I are NOT important to him!
best way is to ignore, i mean ignore HIS ANTICS, you can bet on that the boss IS AWARE of him, so do your work, AND DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT sink to his level, JUST SAY HELLO WHEN HE DOES, otherwise he does not evolve in your circle, so keep him out by, just carry on as IF HE'S NOT THERE!!!! I know got 4 girls in office, like that, they stick nose up i ignore completely! even laugh in face

you be friendly to him... why become "Him" in front of him? Be nice to him... eventually he will become nice to you... no matter how rude or shrewd he is.. if he doesnt, never mind..

As for his career goes, there comes a day when everyone realises what kind of person one is... so if he is a selfish fellow, he will be dealt with accordingly... he is mean with many people.. so that day will come sooner..

Act professional. Never stoop to that level. Say hello, and that's it, if after a while he doesn't change just ignore him altogether.

say hello but add a harmless # to your greeting, as in "good morning, oh,looks like you had a rough one, well it's gonna be a good day so chin up, sport" you'll smile all day on the inside
