When you first install iTunes, it will search for any non-iTune format sound files and convert them. It should ask you if you want to do this.

If all else fails (for example if you have some protected files that cannot be added), you can always burn them to a CD and import them into iTunes.

Plug in your media library to your PC. Click on the file menu in i-tunes and select import files from library. Find your media player library in the folder list and select it. This will import all the files in the media player into i-tunes library, as long as the file type is compatible.

Do you have your songs from your media player libary in your 'My Music' folder? If so right click on them go down to open with the click 'iTunes' the songs then should start playing in iTunes. If not in my music folder go up to the top (toolbar, i think) click file then export, i think that should work ! :)
