I stayed in Chiang Mai in 2005 about 4 months and love it. My sister lives there. No, I didn't stay with her but at a couple of guesthouses. This led to the opportunity to be in acquaintace with a tour guide, a very decent one. He's a one man operator and licensed for both Thai and English speaking tourists. He also runs an inexpensive guesthouse from his own home inside the moat in Chiang Mai City with its location only 7 minutes walk to the 'Sunday Walking Street.' His tour company is called 'Chiang Mai Fat Man Tour & Coffee House'. He will pick his guest up (no charge) from Chiang Mai Airport if you let him know your arrival flight and time. I went to Mae Hong Son with him with his pick up truck; a very safe driver. Best of all, he knows of best places to eat lunch and dinner along the way, not much of shopping spots 'cause I did let him know before the trip that I'm not interested in shopping but culture and sight seeing, and requested no crowded places. He did cater to my requests. His contact # in Thailand is 66-53-213624 and his name is Chutchavin (pronounce as 'Shut-cha-win). In my opinion, he's a very knowledgeable tour guide. He is not a friend of mine and I do not know him personally. However, he was a good guide.

Yes, many times. Not sure of any tour agencies, but make sure to go to Masea Elephant Camp. Can usually book from hotels, or make a deal with a taxi. Also the night baazar and walking street. Enjoy the cooler mornings and evenings.

Chiangmai do have many places of interest In the city area, and many outside Look at www.tourismthailand.org for the listing.

Usual thing like shopping at the night markets, temple visits, cave visits, mountain resorts stay, elephant camp and training, snake show, mountain trekking, hill tribes village visit, eco-trail. So if you really wants to do plenty, be prepared to stay awhile there.

Yep been there stack of times. It's pretty crowded and polluted these days and I prefer Mae Hong Son , but that's me. Tours and places of interest? Lonely Planet guide. Buy one.
