let's say cops pulls you over or stops you on the street and asks you for i.d. for whatever reason. If you don't have it on you and refuse to give officer your name/address, etc. can the officer arrest you? If so, would you stay in jail untill you provided them with that info? Also, if you're in jail and never give out that information how can they find out and can they keep you in there without filling paper work since you didn't provide them with your i.d. and other personal information?

some have answered that you would be in contempt of court for refusing to provide identification and that you would go to jail for it. Do you know for how long? Would it be untill you complied with the law?
Assuming this person has no criminal record (and so fingerprint comes up with nothing) would the court or police department eventually put out a notice on the newspaper asking if anyone could identify the person refusing to provide their id?
