He is around 8-10yrs old. He is a mixed breed but would consider him a big dog, maybe a German Shepeard/Golden Retriever mix? I am afraid that one of these times he won't be able to get back up! Any suggestions?

You can get a supplement for him at any pet supply or livestock supply.
Look for one with Chondroitin and Glucosamine. You should see a big difference.

I am a GSD owner and sadly it is very common for this breed to suffer with displacia (hip problem). Because your dog is a mix, you probably won't be able to find out the full history, but it could be that the GSD bit of him has inherited this problem. It can be quite expensive to have his hips looked at by the vet, however, if you have insurance you could do it through this. I only have knowledge through growing up with this breed and my own dog. It might even be a bit of arthritis. He is becoming a bit of an "old boy" in dog years now, either way good luck as it is heart breaking to see your dog in pain

Hi there. I have shepherds and boy do they love the cold weather. You should be able to leave her outside for 30 mins if temps are in the 20's - but be aware of windchill factors, sun/clouds too, and adjust for that. 30 mins is enough time to burn up some energy and check everything out, without getting too cold. Keep an eye on her the first few times to make sure she adjusts if she's not used to the cold. Usually they will shiver when they've had enough.

If he is in pain you shouldn't have him out in the cold for long periods of time. You should have him inside on a dog bed with a heating pad ... heat helps animals as it does humans. You can give him an anti-inflammatory drug called Rimadyl or AKA Carprofen its used for the treatment of inflammation in dogs for conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. I had a rottweiler for 10yrs ... he was an outside and inside dog but the last two years before I had to have him put down he was having issues getting himself up off the floor so I started giving him this as recommended by my roommate who is a Vet and he did better with it. I hope this helps.

Your dog sounds like it has (oesteo) arthritis.
Start him on Glucosamine supplements (human health food store sells) give him 1 tablet (1000mg) once a day and get him to a vet so they can start him on pain reliefe called NSAID (non steriodal anti inflammatory drugs). Both of these will help with the pain and aid in the groing back of joint tissue. They may also suggest a course of injections called Cartrophen Vet (or similar) which also help in the rebuilding a joint tissue and pain.
Please don't let him suffer any longer when there is stuff available to help!!

My late Freckles, passed a away a few months ago at age 14. She was a boder collie germ shep X. SHe had really bad arthritis from 12 on, like she would fall and we would have to carry her. She got the arthritis at like 10-11. The cold, like humans, does not help the arthris. Ask you dr. because there are options such as the asprin or rimadyl charprofin. Its def. hard to watch them fall and go through it, Boy do I know. But def ask your Dr. Good Luck!

your dog my be suffering arthritis. The reason I say this is because I have had 2 big dogs and they too had the same problem in the cold and even to stand up, sometimes even if you give them some sort of vitamin helps them when they get old.Another thing is that some bred of dogs do have hip problems and I thing it is the German Sheperd that have this.

well it sounds like arthritis. try not to keep him out too long in the cold damp weather. also when he sleeps at night give him a nice warm blanket that will help somewhat. also put him on cosiquin you can get it from your vet. also do not give your dog asprin like the first person said to do. it can kill the dog espically if he is allerigic to it. if its getting too bad consult your vet as they will be able to help you more with options.

Give him 1/2 an asprin. It will take out some of the inflamation in his joints and muscles.
