What causes a Pimple?

A number of things can cause a pimple:

An improper diet that includes too many soft drinks, spicy and fried food and snacks with high iodine content
Pores clogged by dirt or pollution
Stress
Hormonal changes due to menstruation
Genes - blame it on the folks

Whatever you do, DO NOT squeeze your pimples, as it's like a mini trauma to your skin, you're bruising it. It will cause scars. Also, there has been no evidence that your diet (eg sugary or fried foods) causes pimples. The oil that you eat does not end up on your face! It is naturally occuring, and can get clogged, and then infected by germs on your face (that no amount of scrubbing will get rid of). You need to use a gentle, suitable cleanser no more than twice a day amd moiturise while your face is still a little damp so that the moisture gets trapped in. Even if your face is oily, it still needs moisture. Scurbbing your face will only aggrivate pimples. Also, keep your hands off your face! The germs from your hands can aggrivate clogged pores, causing pimples and spreading them all over your face. There has been a link between sunshine and treatment of pimples (not to say that you should get out and sunbathe till youre cripsed). Wear a suitable sunscreen and go for a walk, drink plenty of water (not only for pimples, your body needs tonnes of it just to function properly!) and be gentle to your face. As frustrated as you might get, scrubbing it will only make it worse. For scars, try a cream with vitamin e. Make note that too many fancy creams will be more detrimental than beneficial. I recommend Paler's Cocoa Butter, which is actually meant for things like stretchmarks. There has been clinical evidence that Vitamin E can fade scarring over time, so give that a try. If all else fails, go to a good dermatologist.

Some home remedies that have been suggested: 2 tablespoons brown sugar (to act as the gentlest exfoliator) 1 tablespoon honey (known for its antiseptic properties) few drops lemon juice (as above) few drops vinegar (as above) Spread over face, leave for a while and rinse off 2 tablespoons rolled oats (also oatmeal in some countries) 1 tablespoon honey lemon juice Spread over face. You can also try the oats cooked first, then mixed with honey and lemon. Tea tree oil has also been reputed to have antiseptic properties.

The Romans used to splash their bodies with cold water after coming out of war places, to close the pores. Splash some cold water on your face after your cleansing routine. Sorry if this has been a bit confusing!

Perhaps your acne is caused by stress and you should "cleanse" yourself. You know, avoid activities that can cause too much strees and make your state of mind uncomfortable. You know what your body can and can't deal with better than anybody!
A good skin care system can help, also. Mary Kay makes a great system of skin care that is tailored to suit the needs of all age groups. I bet you can find a consultant near you (or online) who can give you a free facial and/or free samples. Check source for more info, and good luck finding what you need!

A lot of my friends put toothpaste over their zits overnight because it dries them out. I haven't done it, but they seem to think it works.

On another sidenote, I'm sure you get it enough. But smoking is terrible for you. You seemed worried about your appearance, well smoking yellows your teeth and nails. It also turns your skin grey, ages you early through wrinkles, and makes your face look bony and skeleton like. Oh yeah, and it kills you. Kick the habbit before it is too late.
