He is 12 weeks old and wants to sleep on my lap ALL DAY LONG! As much as I love this adorable little guy, he is driving me nuts! The moment I sit down, he wants to be on my lap. I can lay him next to me with my arm on him and he will fall asleep, but the moment I get up, he wakes up and is under foot. I've stepped on him twice today, poor little guy. I bought him a cozy little bed and "pup tent" to sleep in at night. I lay him in it and he freaks out. So I put my arm in there with him and get him to fall asleep, but the moment I move away from him he wakes up and starts freaking out again. We go through this every night. So I get him to sleep and then close the door, but by the time I get to my bedroom, he is already crying. I let him cry for almost 30 minutes last night, but then I couldn't handle it anymore. I need him to sleep by himself both day and night. He is asleep on my lap RIGHT NOW!!! Please help.

i had this very sam eproblem with a pup once before. the only thing i can tell you is what i did with mine. i got a crate big enough for her to stand up and turn around in and i allso would put an old towel or blanket in there that i had put in the dryer long enough for it to get warm and stay that way for a while and i put one of those old fashioned ticking clocks on the out side of her crate.also what else helped was putting something in there of mine that had my "scent" on it and after a few nights of her crying and me not giving in she learned to like it there. she eventually learned it was "her" place to go to when she wanted to be left alone. i dont know if this will help i hope it dose. and good luck!!

Crate training can be very beneficial, but it may not always be 100% successful. You may have to try a variety of approaches to convince your dog that this is what you want and that the crate is a safe, secure den. Always bear in mind that for no reason should a crate be used as a form of punishment. Such action will only cause the dog to fear and resent the crate.

A crate isn't a magical solution. If not used correctly, a dog can feel trapped and frustrated. For example, if your dog is crated all day while you're at work and then crated again all night, he's spending too much time in too small a space. Your dog should only be confined to a crate when you are at home. Except at night, give your dog an opportunity to relieve himself every hour. Each time you let him out, put him on leash and immediately take him outside. Other arrangements should be made to accommodate his physical and emotional needs. Also remember that puppies under six months of age shouldn't stay in a crate for more than three or four hours at a time. They can't control their bladder for longer periods.

I always put a blanket in my dogs crate she loves her crate ... gets all excited and runs and jumps inside of it haha she is totally cute.

Every night, put him in a empty room with cold flooring and his bed in the corner. Lock the door (or jam it so he can't get out) and ignore his whining. He'll soon have no choice but to sleep on his bed. Also, it should stop him from opening doors! His whining will go on, but if the first time takes an hour, then the next night will take like half an hour.

Also try to get him to sleep at about 8:00 as he'll be asleep when you go to sleep.

We trained most of our Jack Russells to dog carriers. They do usually fuss the first 2-3 nights, but then they learn that you will let them out in the morning and they adjust very well. At bedtime we just get up and say time for bed and they run into their carriers. They are also lap dogs and we make time for them to be in our laps and get their attention throught the day.

Here are good suggestions 1. Use a crate 2. REMEMBER: The dog is only 8 weeks. it may be afraid to sleep alone. 3. You also started a habit. 4. If you do keep him in a crate let him be in the room! Your welcome Hope this helps :)
