I understand that the American Civil War was not fought over slavery, but can we at least agree that the abolishment was an example of the good that came out of that war?

Logic tells us that words such as "never" and "always" are causes for alarm & inspection... because the world is such an ambigous place. Some things cannot or are not solved by sitting in a circle holding hands & playing nice. I am a pretty liberal person, but even I can see that sometimes war is what happens or has to happen.

The Civil War was not over slavery! That may have been a side issue, but not the reason the war was fought!

War is the final political solution and there is little you can do but respond if being attacked! Hitler was a good example. The Japanese hit Pearl Harbor after we cut off all their resources. FDR had been trying like hell for 2 years to get into WW II and was shot down by the Congress. Pearl Harbor was his in! Actually Germany declared war on us before we did on them!

We have never been attacked by anyone in Iraq so that is about the stupidest war ever fought!

There are a lot of things that can be done before a war. One is to never start one as it is against International Law, unless attacked, and we were not attacked by any country! If Saddam had won Bush would be having his neck stretched!

Wars are the best solutions (after dialogue has been exhausted) to settle things; and most wars have done that. American Civil War, WW1, WWII, Serbia are good examples of how wars can and will achieve a conclusion. The frustration today is that we expect a fast and conclusive end to the Iraq-type war - this is unrealistic and impossible.

Some advocate that all foreign troops pull out and let Iraq go all out to civil war - this is not such a crazy idea because there will be a time when a stronger force will prevail which means, some kind of settlement conclusion has been achieved. Or else the problem will be indefinite like now. There will be no clean ending.

Hmmm, good point. I am always telling people that in the 1700's if you were British what would you have called the rebellious Americans. I think the word is Terrorist. How America has come full circle!! Look at the Boston Tea Party. That was really outrageous in that time and culture. You have to be able to see things the way they were. Example, now you can date a girl, live with her and not get married. That was frowned upon in those days. Your woman would have been called names behind your back. And American slavery or was it American Apartheid. Can someone tell me the difference. lol

But war is inevitable and the nature of things. Just like animals kill to eat, well we have just civilized our ways. We kill for the thrill.

War is never the Answer, War is the most primitive form of population control ever devised. War is nothing but sadness for all. War happens when the population allows it's government to control the people, instead of the other way around. Wars are started by Leaders who take advantage of a population asleep.
Slavery is still basically intact in America, as far as discrimination & Bigotry.
Hitler's Nazi's are alive and well , here in America look at #43 !

If you think the American Civil War was fought over slavery you are not very well read.It was fought over land and southern resources which the north thought was controlled by to few men !! If the war had been fought over slavery it wouldn't have taken another 100+ years for blacks to even get the vote !!

War should be waged as a last resort. It's one of the choices that is to be chosen at the end as it can result in loss of life. Moreover, waging war with enough capacity can only strenghthen the enemy.

Take the example of Independence in India. It was with other means of protests like non-cooperation, non-violent protests etc., Many people fought with arms but couldn't get it.

War some time is the only answer. What about American Slavery?? Americans are not slaves. Hitler, he is dead, and I am glad, just like Saddam, and I am really, really glad he is.

I have to say that sometimes war is the only answer. If some one wants to enslave you and take away your freedom and way of life then of course war is justified. War is also justified when diplomacy fails, and when you are dealing with unchecked naked agression. Some times it is the only answer, and all you bleeding hearts who wanna say it is never the answer--the only reason you have the freedom and ability to spout your hippie B.S. is because some one fought a war to achieve our freedom so you can mock it and abuse it and take it for granted. You make me sick!
