I live in Central California and just got the cutest puppy, small mixed breed. He is 12 weeks old and has not had any shots yet. This is my first dog, because growing up, my sister was very allergic to them and we were never allowed to have any pets. Fortunately, he is about 90% potty trained, but I really have no idea on how to choose a vet or at what age to get his shots and have him neutered. I already know that he cannot eat any people food, but beyond that, any advice from experienced dog lovers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This puppy is a mixed breed, aka mutt. I got him for free because the owner didn't get his female fixed and ended up with an unwanted litter. Reason #1 for promoting spaying is population control. It is nearly impossible to "keep an eye" on your pet 24/7. Reason #2 is to prevent agression in males and #3 is to prevent "marking his territory". Not to mention health reasons such as prostate cancer.

You know, I find it rather amusing that the person calling me evil is the one with the evil screen name. I mean really, what kind of person would want to be known for slitting other's throats, anyway?

Puppies should begin to get there shots at 8 weeks old to protect them from serious viruses that are often fatal. A vet will not spay or neuter them until they have had at least 3 shots around here. My husband just call for prices here in western NY and got prices from $60-$150 to neuter a puppy, depending on weight and which vet you choose to go to.

I would HIGHLY suggest Puppies for Dummies. A lot of great info. I have an older version than the one listed below, but there is a lot of great stuff in here! Iuse to work at a vets office and a typical spay neutor, thier bill would usally be between 150-400. This is dependent on the type of bloodwork you get before. You want to get the bloodwork to see if your pet will be ok. I would say in the puppies first year in vets visits alone your looking at spending 1,000 for shots and everything, flea treatments ect. Having a dog is the greatest thing in the world. My 14 year old just passed away and i am so ready for another puppy. But I highly suggest this book. Also look into pet insurance, it will prob. be beneficial through out the pets life if it ever gets really sick or an unexpected surgery. Just a thought! Good luck!

A lot of animal hospitals schedule dogs or kittens to be spayed or neutered at the time of their last puppy or kitten vaccinations (3-4 months). They routinely spay or neuter orphans for human societies and rescue organizations as early as six weeks of age. The younger the patient, the less anesthesia required, the faster the procedure, the fewer the complications and the shorter the recovery period. Pricing varies depending on how much your dog weighs for cost of anesthesia. You should be able to get a nueter coupon from the local humane society and a lot of places have *clinics* on weekends where you can get your animals spayed for little to no money.

He needs to get his shots tomorrow, as he is at the most susceptible age for common deadly viruses..He won't need to be neutered until at or near 6 months old. You can call 1-800 SPAYUSA t o get the best bargain on having him neutered. Here, normally it is about $60-$75 for a male, depending on size and breed..However, the low cost program is only $35.

Having him neutered will deprive him of his very nature. Animals are not people and its not right to enforce human morality on them. if everyone would keep an eye on their animals and donate the $100 it costs to have them castrated, and not buy from breeders then it would solve the alleged overpopulation problem.

To spay or neutere and animal is cruel and unusual punishment for no crime but being unfortunate enough to belong to someone as evil, cruel and vile as you.
